End of an Era, The Beginning of Another

Today is my last day at my job. I've been here 5+ years, the longest I've ever been employed by one company. Lori and I are home together for one week and then she goes back to work. And my job as full time stay at home dad begins. Way back when we first started talking about it, I was all excited about being able to have all the house chores done, dinner cooked, time to do freelance art, and time to play with my motorcycles. Then Max came and the reality set in: there is no free time anymore. I was amazingly naive. Max is 100% full time gig. During the time when he isn't feeding, or playing, or being cranky, he may nap for 30 minutes to an hour. And the cycle repeats about every 3 hours. And that possible hour is not enough time to do much with other than sit down and relax for a few seconds. For that reason, I've decided to just put away my toys for the foreseeable future until Max gets to an age where he is just a little more self-sustaining. I might be able to wheel and deal a few hours a week here and there, but for the most part, if I want to be a responsible daddy, I need to focus on him. Once Lori gets home from work it's time for me to work on art gigs. It's going to be interesting. So expect less motorcycle related posts, but hopefully I start posting more art-related things. And of course, lots of MAX!

My wife and I worked opposite schedules at work when our kids were little. It was tough, really tough for us as a couple, but raising your own kids is the best thing you can do for them. It totally paid off for us.

It gets easier. Little by little you find more time. Max may be out their helping you before you know it. Don't loose yourself. It's pretty damned important to maintain some interests of your own. All work and no play makes Vorhese a dull dad.

It's super noble what you are doing. I'm as much a "Mom" to my kids (even the grown ones) as my wife is (she'd agree by the way). I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Lastly, have another kid. It really DOES make it much easier in the long haul and together your kids have a fighting chance to defend themselves from their parents inevitable built-in psychosis.
